People in Your Neighbourhood

What is a neighbourhood?
Who are the people you see each day?
This was a popular song when I was a child. I shared 3 small clips of Sesame Street with Cedar Group.



We looked at a google map of Southland's Elementary's neighbourhood. 

I asked the group if they knew what it was. Sophia recognized it as a map. I asked what our map has on it. Roisin said she saw houses. I pointed at the white lines and asked what these could be. Jamieson said they are streets. I asked them if they knew what this area is called. Many children said it was a community. I asked if they had heard the word neighbourhood before. Sophia said she has some neighbours that live near her. Miguel said 'I have neighbours too!' 
I brought out some paper, rulers and markers for us to make our own neighbourhood maps. 

The children's neighbourhoods look like a fun and colourful place to live.

This morning Brianna was leading one group of children in music. As they sang they were trying to count how many times the song had the word 'together'.   Mai had the other group for math. She played a game that had the days of the week. Everyone would cover their eyes and she'd sneakily take one day away. The children would then guess what day was missing by counting through the days.

Mary Wore Her Red Dress. This song is well known to the children at CM. It's a song that I use quite often to transition from one activity to another. Today we dove deeper into the 'game' part of the song. I started by looking around at our group of children. Looking to see if an article of clothing caught my eye. I said, I'm looking at Saige's shoes. Saige would you mind to stand up here and show us your shoes? She said yes, and then came to stand next to me. Raise your hand if you have a way to describe Saige's shoes. Some children said running shoes or pink shoes or fast shoes. I asked Saige what term she would like to use for her shoes. She said she'd like to call them pink shoes. I asked her if she would mind if we sang about her shoes. She smiled and agreed. I wrote her name on the big piece of paper and drew her shoes.
