Colour My World

Formative stages when developing the Inquiry
The use of assessment FOR learning is known as “formative
Assessment”. On Thursday the teachers started their 3 to 5 day
formative assessment process.We presented a variety of
experiences and then listened to the children as they spoke to
one another during their explorations. Teachers took notes of
statements children made and will use these and other
observations to help them determine the scope and path of the
inquiry. As you can see, the learner plays a significant role in
advancing their learning interests.

Over the course of this process through to the Summative
Assessment (due in 8 weeks), the teachers will further develop
the central idea which is

When we explore the nature of colour, our appreciation of the world expands.

The teachers will also develop ways that the children can assess
their own learning over time (“I used to think that but now I
think this”.
They will also find ways to help the children give one another
feedback about learning which means they will be sharpening
their observation skills and practicing their learning from the
unit on generosity.

Mary Wore Her Red Dress. This song is well known to the children at CM. It's a song that I use quite often to transition from one activity to another. Today we dove deeper into the 'game' part of the song. I started by looking around at our group of children. Looking to see if an article of clothing caught my eye. I said, I'm looking at Saige's shoes. Saige would you mind to stand up here and show us your shoes? She said yes, and then came to stand next to me. Raise your hand if you have a way to describe Saige's shoes. Some children said running shoes or pink shoes or fast shoes. I asked Saige what term she would like to use for her shoes. Terry Fox

Southlands Elementary had the Terry Fox run today. They invited CM's children to attend an assembly and watch a video about his accomplishments. I have two children in elementary school and I've seen the video they usually show. I was curious about how 3-4 year olds would handle these big issues. What questions would they have? Would we have space and time to answer the inquiries during the assembly? Probably not. When I gathered the children after lunch time I wanted to see how much they knew about him. "Who is Terry Fox?" People in Your Neighbourhood

What is a neighbourhood? Who are the people you see each day? This was a popular song when I was a child. Sophia recognized it as a map. I asked what our map has on it. Roisin said she saw houses. I pointed at the white lines and asked what these could be. Jamieson said they are streets. I asked them if they knew what this area is called. Many children said it was a community. I asked if they had heard the word neighbourhood before.
