Generosity Coupons

We tried to come up with things to give that didn't cost real money. Our list included things like, giving a hug or kiss, singing a song, or having playtime together. Then the children and I made our own money/coupons. They decided who they wanted to gift it to, and what what the offer should be.

Ice Cream Math

We have many makers of ice cream here at Creative Minds. Many materials are used in this play. Play doh is often used inside and rocks with twigs are most often used when outside. For math we pasted cones at the bottom of a sheet of paper, and drew a helping line all the way up. The line was to help balance the ice cream scoops on top of each other so they don't fall. We rolled special coloured dice to tell us what coloured pom pom to use. We talked about the colour and what flavour it could be. After we filled up our whole page with ice cream scoops, we counted them all.

The Many Forms of Sharing

Most people's understanding of sharing in a daycare setting is with toys. Taking turns. Sharing items and equipment. But if we look at how our community shares with each other and compare it with the children's understanding what do we see? The children see the importance of preparing food and sharing this with others. This happens inside our centre as well as in the forest. Once in the forest, markets are carved out under trees and merchants sell their wares. Pinecones, stones, seeds and twigs become food to be shared. Ice cream and treats are easy to find but merchants are always happy to fill special requests. Money is sometimes requested in exchange for food but most often food is given for free. It was lovely to see how Valentine's Day was able to coincide with our generosity unit of inquiry. The children were SO excited to be able to mail their valentines to friends and family. Friendship chain and interviews - Caring

The children were cutting strips of pink and red paper and gluing them into loops. The loops were carefully connected to each other as a symbol of friendship. As the children were cutting and glueing, I interviewed them about the child sitting beside them. Everyone was sitting next to someone they don't usually play with. When everyone had made some chain links we joined them into one big chain.
